Martial ARTs: A Way of Life
For over four decades, Coach King has lived the martial path. He has fought on streets, in rings, and on the doors of Johannesburg's most dangerous nightclubs. He has trained with world-class fighters, built systems adopted by special forces and law enforcement worldwide, and coached everyone from complete beginners to elite operators. He has also, by his own admission, been part of the very culture this book calls into question.
Martial ARTs: A Way of Life is his most personal and most important work. It is not a training manual. It is not a motivational book. It is a philosophical argument, forged over a decade of notes, reflections, and hard questioning, that modern martial arts has kept the fighting and lost the art. That a practice once designed to form complete human beings has been reduced to spectacle, commerce, and the endless performance of worth. And that if the path is to mean anything beyond technique, it must be reclaimed by practitioners willing to ask what their training is actually making of them.
Many books have called martial arts a way of life. This is the first to mean it philosophically.
Drawing on thinkers from Aristotle to Camus, from the Stoics to Heidegger, and grounding every argument in the reality of a life lived under genuine pressure, King makes the case that the true martial artist has always been a renegade: someone whose practice places them in deeper allegiance to truth than to conformity. Someone who refuses to let the culture decide what strength is for.
This book is offered freely because the ideas in it should not be behind a paywall. It is written for the practitioner who senses that the path has more to offer than what the modern martial arts world has made of it, and who is willing to find out what that might look like.
It is, in the author's own words, the most important thing he has ever written about his martial arts journey.
